So unfortunately my theory of moving more south to hopefully get more sunshine didn't work out so well. Geneva is notorious for grey skies in winter because it is surrounded by mountains. Well even if I'm without sunshine at least I've got some pretty amazing mountains nearby... Day trip to Chamonix! It's an extremely popular mountain town in nearby France. Interesting fact, it's also where Mama Valentine learned to ski when she was 15 (well she's pretty positive). Anyway, it's only an hour away and well worth the drive. Gorgeous mountains views, a quaint little mountain town and most importantly SUNSHINE! It felt like I was right back in Colorado.
We spent most of the day exploring the town and just relaxing in good company. For the most part the town was pretty empty as it was right between seasons but it was perfect for what we wanted.

The holiday season in Europe is probably my favorite time. Even though I miss out on Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas with my friends and family back home, I get to celebrate it with new friends and even share the tradition with foreigners not accustomed to them. Halloween isn’t nearly as mainstream in Europe as in America, but surprisingly enough there are quite a few people who celebrate it; especially with Geneva being inhabited by a melting pot of foreigners. This year I feel like I didn’t miss much...I got to carve pumpkins, dress up and even celebrate the holiday with a bunch of zombies and disney characters.
The Saturday before Halloween, over 1300 people living in Geneva embraced their inner superhero or in my case, historical icon and got together downtown to celebrate. So what was I? Good ol’ Rosie the Riveter, or one of the top last minute costume ideas on google. Although the party was not worth the 25 CHF I had to pay to get in (everything is so gosh darn expensive here), it was fun to dress up and be surrounded by people from across the globe. On Friday (actual Halloween) the North Americans got together to carve some pumpkins and stuff ourselves with pumpkin treats. Of course we had plenty of decorations (straight from the states of course...thanks Mama!) so it felt like your typical North American Halloween. Until my European Thanksgiving, my weekends are pretty booked with double games on Saturday and Sunday. Season has officially begun! Go Geneve Volley! |
