. . .to the Medieval Ages! I had 2 full days in Edinburgh and got 2 days of sunshine, does it get any better?! Yep, add good friends to the mix in a beautiful city and you’ve got a perfect weekend! I was blown away the second I entered the city…mountains, ocean, and architecture like I’ve never seen. Since this is the first time I’ve been in Scotland, culture shock and sensory overload to the max. I was that oblivious tourist staring up at every building, awe-struck, wanting to capture all the beauty and culture the city had to offer. Meri, Richard and I met up and after a hearty meal we wandered off through the streets of Edinburgh: up and down the Royal Mile, through the Princes Street Gardens below the Castle, down to Grassmarket and eventually into a bakery for some biscuits and tea (well I had some hot chocolate but biscuits were definitely ordered at our table). At that point we felt like all we’d really done was eat so it was time to head up to Arthur’s Seat for a nice sunset hike and a view of the city. Arthur’s seat is an extinct volcano that sits right at the edge of the city and offers incredible panoramic views and as always, pictures don’t do it justice. We started the next day with a cup of joe and then it was off to the museum! The National Museum of Scotland recently underwent a £46 million renovation and every review I read said it was worth the visit. And when that visit is free, even better! Gotta love the UK…Meri and Richard headed off to the Celtic exhibit while I explored space, animals and geology. The museum was filled with information and I likely could have spent days reading facts, but unfortunately Meri had a flight to catch and our time together was cut a bit short. One last meal before we headed off to the airport and said our goodbyes (and hopefully see you soon’s).
By the time I was back in the city I still had an hour before the museums closed so I headed for a quick peak at the Scottish National Gallery. Impressionist art has become one of my all-time favorites so being able to see some more works from Monet, Degas and Van Gogh was dead brilliant. With the sun still shining I continued to wander the streets and stumbled upon a park outside the city and enjoyed yet another beautiful view of the Edinburgh skyline. To cap off the evening Richard and I headed to a bar for some live music. Before my trip I had no idea how big music was in Scotland but live shows are offered in numerous bars and it’s quite easy to find good entertainment. The next morning before saying my goodbyes (to the city and Richard), I enjoyed a run through the streets of Edinburgh and decided that this would not be my only visit. Until then though I’m going to do my best to enjoy what Spain has to offer before I head back to America (just one month!). Next up: a visit to the land of free tapas!
