Eight. That's the number of months I've been in the US now and over the past 2 years, that's been the longest time I've spent in any one particular country. Obviously I've got to travel much further to leave the American borders but for the majority of my stay I've remained relatively stationary. After having been abroad for most of the past 2 years I decided to spend some quality time with family and friends. Before taking on a new challenge though I decided to spend a couple months among friends and family to try and make up for lost times. While being abroad you tend to miss out on a couple things (only your cousins growing up, your friends having children and almost every holiday) so these past 7 months will be some that I will cherish for a long time. On the contrary, there have been things I have missed about being overseas. Traveling to unfamiliar places is obviously pretty high up on that list, along with the unique challenges that come with it. And the Christmas Markets! I could never forget the Christmas Markets. Some fresh roasted chestnuts and hot wine sound pretty great right about now. Fingers crossed I get there in time!
So how do I go about fixing this need for travel and challenge in my life without volleyball? Well since I’ve spent 2 years kind of learning a new language I figured why not go to school full time and become fluent? I’m assuming one day I’ll end up back in the US and really the most useful language here is Spanish, so Spain here I come! Yes, I’m aware there are differences between Spanish in Spain and Spanish in Mexico but I didn’t think Mexico (or Southern California as Mom suggested) would be able to satisfy this Euro lifestyle desire I have right now. I’m ready to fully immerse myself in the Spanish culture and what better way to do it than live with a Spanish family. During the day I’ll be in classes but at night I’ll be helping take care of 3 adorable little children. Yep, I’m an au pair. So I think I’ve met all my criteria…new country ✔….new occupation ✔…new challenge ✔…so bring on the siestas, tapas and futbol! I hope Madrid is ready for me :)
